Life Expectancy vs. Age at Death in 1 in 8 Billion
This page explains one part of the game. It is an independent copy, not the official site. The life itself starts on this language’s homepage.
What the average is
Life expectancy at birth summarizes a group. It is not the age one person is promised. Remaining life expectancy at a later age is a different summary, and this page does not pretend they are the same number.
Why places differ
Each place has its own le, sex gap, infant deaths and under-five deaths. Japan is higher than Nigeria on le in this file. That gap has many real causes. The game does not reduce them to one moral score.
Female and male baselines
The model sets a female baseline near le plus about half of gap, and a male baseline near le minus about half of gap. Those are internal starting points. They are not an official life-table formula from outside the game.
Infants and young children
im is infant deaths per 1,000 live births. u5 is deaths before age five, also per 1,000. Do not read either as a percent, and do not treat the under-five figure as the chance of dying at every later age.
A modeled cohort
The tool shows the share of a modeled group still alive at a few ages. The curve is not allowed to rise. It is the game’s own construction, including a fallback where the source has no age-5-to-14 factor. It is not a WHO life table, and it does not predict your character.
How the year of death is drawn
During a life the game reads that table and then moves the chance with age, health, the place and other conditions. Two characters from the same place and sex can die at different ages. The ending screen is the place to read the age that was drawn.
Health does not grant extra years
A higher Health score can lower risk inside the model. It cannot make death impossible. 100 is not immunity.
Other years
If a past or future year is ever calculated, it has to come from era.js. That file is absent, so this page will not show a historical or future life expectancy. Today’s le is not a substitute.
A long-lived country, an early death
That can happen. The average never promised the birthday.
Why did the character die before the average?
The average is a group summary. The life draws an age.
Does health 100 prevent death?
No.
Is this the WHO table?
No. It is the game’s model, built from the place file.
